In August 2023, Ukrzaliznytsia transported 12.266 million tons of cargo in all types of connections. This is 13.8% more than in August 2022 and in line with July 2023, despite a drop in export shipments due to the blockage of the grain agreement.

Traditionally, the leaders in terms of transportation volumes in August 2023 were construction materials (3.203 million tons), hard coal (2.348 million tons), iron and manganese ore (2.060 million tons), and grain cargo (1.677 million tons).

The Ukrainian Grain Association has updated its estimate of the potential crop in 2023, increasing it by another 3.7 MMT to 80.5 MMT of grains and oilseeds. As a reminder, in 2022, the UGA the harvest reached 73.8 MMT of grains and oilseeds.

The increase in the forecast for this year’s harvest is due to favourable weather conditions and better crop yields than expected, although the area planted is almost 2 million hectares less than last year.
